Using euros
Prices are shown in euros and cents. Obtain only the cash you expect to use and compare the total cost of exchange rather than an advertised rate alone. Airports and major stations have exchange services, but convenience can carry a weaker rate.
Keep smaller notes for modest purchases. A merchant may struggle to change a high-value note for a coffee or bus ticket early in the day.
Cards and mobile wallets
Major card networks are widely accepted, especially in cities and established accommodation. Mobile payments are common in larger centres. Carry a backup card because unattended fuel pumps, ticket machines or fraud controls can treat a foreign card differently.
Ask to pay the displayed euro amount. If a terminal offers home-currency conversion, review the rate before accepting; letting your card issuer convert is often preferable.
A safer ATM routine
Prefer a cash machine attached to a recognized bank, inspect the screen for operator fees and decline any conversion you do not understand. Check your own bank’s withdrawal and foreign-transaction charges before departure.
Shield the PIN and do not accept help from strangers. Carry only the day’s cash and store the backup card separately.
Tipping and restaurant charges
Tipping is appreciated for good service but is not normally built around a fixed North American percentage. Review the menu and bill for coperto, servizio or other stated charges before adding extra.
Round up modestly for a taxi or café only when you wish. In tourist areas, verify menu prices before ordering and keep the receipt if the bill is disputed.
