EU/EEA residents may have regulated roaming through an eligible home plan, subject to fair-use terms. Travellers from elsewhere should check the exact daily or per-megabyte charge rather than assuming Europe is included.

A travel eSIM avoids a store visit and can be installed before departure. A local physical SIM may suit a long stay or voice requirement, while public Wi-Fi should remain a secondary connection.

Set up before you fly

Confirm that the phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible. Install on stable Wi-Fi, label the plan “Italy data,” and save the activation instructions offline. On arrival, select the eSIM for mobile data and follow the provider’s data-roaming instructions.

• Disable mobile-data switching to protect the home line.
• Keep the home SIM available only if you understand call and SMS fees.

Coverage and Wi-Fi

Mobile service is broadly available, but tunnels, mountain valleys, islands, thick historic walls and moving trains can interrupt it. Download the next ticket, hotel address and offline map before a remote leg.

Hotels, trains, cafés and cultural venues may provide Wi-Fi, and the official tourism portal points to the Piazza Wi-Fi Italia network. Treat open networks cautiously and confirm the correct network name with the venue.

Choose a sensible data allowance

Navigation, translation, messages and ticket apps often use modest data. Video, automatic photo backup, tethering and large social uploads use much more. Download media and system updates on trusted Wi-Fi.

If travelling as a group, do not make one phone the only source of tickets, directions and payment authentication. Give at least one other traveller offline copies of essential details.
